RESOURCES

The Association of Illustrators (AOI) -

Illustration Age - As well as being a site that promotes Illustrators work, has a Marketplace which links to artist's online shops it also has a monumentally fantastic list of resources - mostly based in America but useful none-the-less:

UK Craft Fairs Directory I got a phone call yesterday from a chap asking for Boo Dillon - first time it's happened.  He runs a small shop in Thornbury and he's looking for Artists and Illustrators to supply his stock. I asked him how he'd heard of me and he said he'd found me on the UK Craft Fairs Website - it's a directory for craft exhibitors of all description to promote themselves and their products.

Art Licensing Info (.com) - A place where artists can learn how to earn income by licensing their art - all the ins and outs - it's an American site so a lot of it might not be relevant and also there are certain things they ask you to pay for - BUT there is enough general free information to make it worth having a good look at.

GoGoMargo - A fantastic resource for events.  Great for anyone who wants to organise an event, they can search for stall holders specific to their market or if you are a stall holder, you can search for events.

Cockpit Arts - 'Making It' - Cockpit Arts is predominantly a crafts collective but they have recently started up a section on their website with invaluable advice for all creatives trying to start a business.  They offer advice on:

  • Business Planning - guidance on defining your goals and making plans
  • Creative Development - Insight on collaborations, commissions and inspiration
  • Finances - How to finance, budget and price your work
  • Management and Operation - advice on managing people and production
  • Sales and Marketing - top tips on selling, branding, marketing and PR
Incredible...

Craft Candy - An online Search Directory resource for finding all the local craft markets and workshops in your area - it even comes with an app!  It's early days for this website and it's very craft oriented - but still very useful for finding craft fairs etc. around the UK.

Stallfinder.com - it does exactly that!  It helps events find stallholders and stallholders find events throughout the UK.

We Make LondonAs their name suggests, this creative organisation is London based - but they set up a number of different markets that are very Illustrator friendly. It's worth keeping an eye on their blog etc.

    UK Handmade -
This fantastic Online Magazine has it's own HUGE forum for small, independent creative businesses.  It's a brilliant way to network with other creatives generally but also to see who lives in your area.  It also has a large directory of shops around the UK who support the handmade ethos.

Cecily Vessey - found of Crafty Fox Market offers exceptional advice for a creative starting out:
